A Night at the Houston Grand Opera

The Houston Grand Opera at the Wortham Theater Center is genuinely world-class and consistently underestimated outside Texas. The building itself is worth seeing — a soaring glass and granite structure in the Theater District downtown. An evening there, with dinner beforehand at Xochi or Eunice in the same neighbourhood, makes for a full evening that feels considered without being overdone. For people who don't follow opera, the HGO also runs more accessible productions throughout the season that work just as well for a date.

Weekend in Austin

Austin is about two and a half hours from Houston and feels like a completely different city. The food scene on South Congress and East 6th has become genuinely excellent in the last few years. Uchi on South Lamar is one of the best Japanese restaurants in the country. The Hill Country just west of the city offers wineries, swimming holes and landscape that's hard to find anywhere else in Texas. For a weekend that's easy to plan and hard to forget, the Four Seasons on Lady Bird Lake is the obvious base. Best for when there's already a good dynamic between you.

Hermann Park and a Rooftop Nightcap

Hermann Park is one of Houston's most underrated assets: 445 acres of green space in the middle of the city, with the Houston Museum of Natural Science and the Houston Zoo on its edges and McGovern Lake at its centre. A late afternoon walk through the park, particularly around the Japanese Garden, transitions naturally into cocktails at one of the rooftop bars nearby. Xochi on Lamar has a rooftop that's hard to beat on a clear Houston evening. Simple, easy and the kind of date that doesn't need much planning to work well.

A Day at the Houston Polo Club

The Houston Polo Club in Eldridge is one of the most active polo clubs in the US and hosts public matches most Sundays from September through November and again in spring. It's upscale and social without being formal — the kind of setting where it's easy to meet people and easy to have a good time without a strict agenda. Dress well, bring a blanket for the sidelines and plan for dinner somewhere in the Memorial area afterwards. It's genuinely different from most date experiences and tends to leave a good impression for exactly that reason.
